Proposal

For my final experiment, I will be writing a short poetry collection about colorism. I am the most excited about this experiment because I love writing poetry. In my spare time, I like to write down interesting sentences or ideas that come to my head, in hopes that I can turn them into a poem eventually. As discussed in my ‘Why I Write’ essay, I also like to write about things I’m passionate about, and colorism is one of those things. This final experiment is a combination of many of the things I love to do so I’m looking forward to seeing where it will take me.

My origin piece, which was a collection of short letters to my future daughter about colorism, included a poem too, but I want to create new ones that better represent the diversity of experience one can have with colorism. Some poems will be sad while others empowering. Some will be funny while others will be angry. I hope to capture the vast emotions that colorism can elicit.

In this experiment, I plan on changing my audience depending on the poem. Some poems will be directed at other dark-skinned girls or black boys, while others may be directed at all people. Because it will be a collection of poems, I think this format will allow me more flexibility with my audience, encouraging readers to pick out the poems that speak to them most. I hope my poems will be pretty to read as well as send an impactful message to readers.
