Reflection

Overall, I really enjoyed making this piece. Although I felt limited at times by the templates on the site I chose, I still really liked the layouts and visuals offered overall. I was also not able to find many alternative websites, so my options were limited even if I had decided to switch platforms.

I also appreciated having the time to talk with my grandmother. I learned a lot of new things about her that started to fill in the gaps of knowledge I had about her upbringing. It made me wish I had taken the time to ask these things before. The conversation helped me realize how complex social issues can be, and the huge effect they can have on one person’s life. I also felt pretty inspired and empowered after I talked to her and I thought to myself, “if she can live her life this proud and strong, then so can I.”

One of the things that I would change about my initial sample is the questions I asked. Many of the questions I asked about the media strayed too far from my grandma’s story and did not fit in well with the photos. I also wished I had asked her more about her parenting, since this will be the main transition to when I talk about my mom.

Another thing I struggled with was finding the balance between quotes and my own words. I wanted to add more transitions, but I also felt like her quotes spoke for themselves. In the end I chose to keep almost all quotes, with only few of my own words. I am pretty satisfied with my finished sample and look forward to sharing it with my family in the future.
